Group of Municipalities of Baalbeck

ü       The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the construction of a sorting and composting facility was prepared by a consulting office under a separate contract with the Municipality.

ü       A new application was submitted by the Group of Municipalities to OMSAR to transfer the file from Concept to Ready.

ü       A contract (AMO) was signed between the Minister of State for Administrative Reform and the Group of municipalities on 15 June 2007.

ü       The Tender for the construction of the solid waste management facility was launched on 22 September 2008. Bid opening took place on 20 November 2008.

ü       The Turning machine will be procured under a seperate Supply Contract in 2010.

ü       After Evaluation of Bids, the contract was awarded to "Al Bonyan Company for Engineering & Contracting sarl" in March 2009.

ü      The commencement Order was issued to the contractor once the permit of the construction of the facility was received on 3 August 2009.

ü      Works on site were stopped in September 2009 due to complaints and demonstrations on site received by the neighboring village of Brital.

ü All efforts executed during the year 2010 to find a suitable piece of land to build the SWM Facility for the Grouping of Municipalities of Baalbeck failed. Several sites were identified in Taybeh, Iaat, Maqneh and Nahle but all of them faced severe public opposition which led to changing the site.

ü  In January 2011, a new piece of land in Baalbeck was offered for building the facility. A new EIA is being prepared along with wide public consultation.
